Sumner-Fredericksburg Schools

Committed to excellence in lifelong learning, leadership, and character.

Building Theme

Each year Durant Elementary implements a theme that encourages good character. The theme is taught and supported by classroom lessons, the principal’s morning annoucements, guidance lessons, ENCORE, and Sumner Shuffles. During a Sumner Shuffle all students and staff participate in a cross-grade lesson. The lesson always begins with a piece of literature and is followed up with an activity to reinforce the lesson’s objective.

Read-A-Million-Minutes also connects with the year’s building theme. During the month of February, the entire student body sets individual and class reading goals. Read-A-Million-Minutes has been a tradition at Durant Elementary since 1981.
